Student Residency Card

European students

Citizens from the European Union do not need a visa for Spain. With a valid Identification Card or passport, they can stay as long as they want.

Non - European students

Students of all Non-European countries will require a visa if they wish to remain in Spain longer than 90 days. The visa is processed in your country of residence prior to your departure. You cannot get the visa in Spain, and you cannot have it sent to you. The visa is affixed in your passport before you depart your country, and must be presented to the border officials upon your entry into Spain. Since visas cannot be issued in Spain, if you come to Spain with a tourist visa and decide to enrol in a course here, you must return to your home country to get another visa. It is unlikely that the residency process can begin with a tourist visa only.

If you plan to study in Spain you have to apply for a student visa in your country before your departure. If the duration of your studies is less than 180 days you will obtain a visa indicating the period of 180 days and you can remain in Spain no longer than 180 days but there is no additional authorization required. If your studies last for more than 180 days you  must contact the local authorities to acquire a student residence card (Tarjeta de autorización de estancia por estudios). It should be applied for within 30 days of arriving in the country. This "Spanish Student Residence Card" is valid a year on an initial permit, which can be renewed, and lasts up to 5 years.

The application should be submitted to the police station  at C/ Cristòfol Grober, 12,  from Monday to Friday (9.00 - 14.00)

You must present the following documents:

  • The official application. You can pick it up at the office.
