Girona

The city of Girona, nestled between four rivers, is a charming city that will surprise you with its many cultural offerings at any time of the year. Girona combines leisure, gastronomic, business and cultural activities in theatre festivals like the Temporada Alta or music festivals like the World and Sacred Music Festival or in events like the Temps de Flors, during which the city and its hidden corners are filled with spectacular floral arrangements. It has first class music and theatre programmes, outstanding gastronomic events and a wide range of museums (including the Museum of the Cinema), art galleries and exhibition halls. You mustn’t miss the Girona nightlife and the cultural, social and athletic activities of a city that is home to more than 15,000 university students.

In the city of four rivers, history and modernity mix and converge in the remarkable Old Town, the Barri Vell. Starting with the picturesque houses on the Onyar River and crowned by an impressive cathedral with the widest gothic nave in the world, roaming its narrow streets you will find hidden and one-of-a-kind treasures like the Jewish Quarter (the Call Jueu, one of the most important in Europe), the Carolingian Wall or the Arab Baths, as well as outstanding works from the Noucentisme period and of modern art.

But Girona is more than that. Its privileged location, near the sea and the mountains, makes it a good starting point to get to know some of the places most recommended in Catalonia: in a radius of less than 50 kilometres you will find the spectacular Banyoles Lake, the medieval beauty of Besalú, the magical volcanic region of Garrotxa, the mysteries of the beech tree forest of Jordà, surrealistic Figueres and its Dalí Museum, the Greco-Roman remains of the ruins of Empúries, the beaches and coves of the Costa Brava, the pure natural beauty of the Cap de Creus Natural Park and the Empordà wetlands or the majestic Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. Thanks to excellent transport links, Girona is only a step away from Empordà, the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees, and only an hour from Barcelona (by car or train) and from Perpignan (France).
